Reading Comprehension (Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.)

The place of the child in society has varied for thousands of years and has been affected by different cultures and religions. In ancient times unwanted children were occasionally abandoned, put to death, exploited, or offered for religious sacrifices, and in any event a large percentage of them didn’t survive their physically hazardous existence to achieve maturity.

In Western civilization within the last few hundred years, there have been many changes in attitude toward the young. In agricultural Europe, and late with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the children of the poor worked long hours for little or no pay, and there was no public concern for their safety or welfare. Punishment could be cruel and severe, and sometimes religious passions were expressed violently with a view toward saving the child’s soul.

By the eighteenth century the harsh, deterministic, doctrinal(教条的)methods began to show some change. Society slowly accorded children a role of importance. Books were written expressly for them and gradually laws were passed for their protection.

In the past few decades parents have become more attentive to the needs of their children. Better health care is available and education is no longer reserved for a limited few. With so many now able to go to college, many educators feel that we have too many students and too few competent scholars. Some say the pendulum(钟摆)in child rearing has swung so far toward permissiveness that many children are growing up alienated(离间)from society and with no respect for law or parental authority.

The tendency today is for teachers and parents to emphasize individual responsibility and to stress that educational goals for students should be tailored to their chosen vocations rather than provide a generalized higher education.

16、What does the article say about children?

·A.They have always been the hope of mankind.

·B.In certain periods of history no one cared about them.

·C.In the mid-eighteenth century western attitudes toward children began to change.

·D.There were laws barring child labor during the industrial revolution.

·D.Emphasizing individual responsibility.

20、Which of the following is implied but not directly stated in the passage?

·A.Methods used to treat children in the past were worse than those at present.

·B.There are laws passed for protection of children.

·C.Parents pay more attention to the needs of their children.

·D.Many books have been written for children.

A

A rapid means of long-distance transportation became a necessity for the United States as settlement(新拓居地)spread ever farther westward. The early trains were impractical curiosities, and for a long time the railroad companies met with troublesome mechanical problems. The most serious ones were the construction of rails able to bear the load, and the development of a safe, effective stopping system. Once these were solved, the railroad was established as the best means of land transportation. By 1860 there were thousands of miles of railroads crossing the eastern mountain ranges and reaching westward to the Mississippi. There were also regional southern and western lines.

The high point in railroad building came with the construction of the first transcontinental, system. In 1862 Congress authorized two western railroad companies to build lines from Nebraska westward and from California eastward to a meeting point, so as to complete a transcontinental crossing linking the Atlantic seaboard with the Pacific. The Government helped the railroads generously with money and land. Actural work on this project began four years later. The Central Pacific Company, starting from California, used Chinese labor, while the Union Pacific employed crews of Irish labourers. The two groups worked at remarkable speed, each trying to cover a greater distance than the other. In 1869 they met at a place called Promontory in what is now the state of Utah. Many visitors came there for the great occasion. There were joyous celebrations all over the country, with parades and the ringing of church bells to honor the great achievement.

The railroad was very important in encouraging Westward Movement. It also helped build up industry and farming by moving raw materials and by distributing products rapidly to distant markets. In linking towns and people to one another it helped unify the United States.

21、The major problems with America’s railroad system in the mid 19th century lay in ________.

·A.lack of financial support for development

·B.poor quality rails and unreliable stopping systems

·C.limited railroad lines

·D.lack of a transcontinental railroad

22、The building of the first transcontinental system ________.

·A.brought about a rapid growth of industry and farming in the west

·B.attracted many visitors to the construction sites

·C.attracted labourers from Europe

·D.encouraged people to travel all over the country

A

23、The best title for this passage would be ________.

·A.Settlements Spread Westward

·B.The Importance of Railroads in the American Economy

·C.American Railroad History

·D.The Coast-to-Coast Railroad: A Vital Link

24、The construction of the transcontinental railroad took ________.

·A.3 years

·B.7 years

·C.4 years

·D.9 years

A

25、What most likely made people think about a transcontinental railroad?

·A.The possibility of government support for such a task.

·B.The need to explore Utah.

·C.The need to develop the railroad industry in the west.

·D.The need to connect the east coast with the west.

Packaging is a very important form of advertising. A package can sometimes motivate people to buy products. For example, a little child might ask for a breakfast food contained in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or a small gift inside a box also motivate many children to buy products—or to ask their parents to buy for them.

Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. Although a similar product in plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product.

The size of a package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package has “Economy Size” or “Family Size” printed on it. This suggests that the larger size has the most product for the least money. But that is not always true. To find it out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit.

The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the whole story. Only the product inside can do that.

26、“A buyer will get something for nothing” in paragraph 2 may probably mean ________.

·A.a buyer will not get what he pays for

·B.a buyer will get more than what he pays for

·C.a buyer will get something useful free of charge

·D.a buyer will get more but pay less

A

27、From the passage we know the buyer pays more attention to ________.

·A.the size of a container

·B.a container with attractive picture

·C.a well-designed container

·D.a plain container with low cost

28、What suggestion does the writer give in the passage?

·A.It’s not good to buy the product which is sold in a glass or dish.

·B.The quality of a container has nothing to do with the quality of the product.

·C.The best choice for a buyer is to buy a product in a plain package.

·D.A buyer should buy what he needs most rather than a well-designed package.

29、Which of the following sentences is NOT true according to the passage?

·A.In fact glasses or dishes used for packaging do not cost money at all.

·B.“Family Size” printed on the package means that it is rather economic.

·C.To a child, even to an adult, the form is far more important than the content.

·D.Words and pictures written on the package are thought to be an advertisement.

A

30、What do you think is the best title for the passage?

·A.How to Package a Product

·B.How to Make an Advertisement

·C.How to Sell Product

·D.How to Attract More Buyers

A

Oceanography has been defined as “The application of all sciences to the study of the sea”. Before the nineteenth century scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between. Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work.

For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface.

The first time that the question “What is at the bottom of the oceans?” had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile of the route to estimate the length of the cable that had to be manufactured.

It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned in 1853 for information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his The Physical Geography of the Sea.

The cable was laid ,but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs, it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea.

Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition, which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea. Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895.

Will Network Classrooms Replace Traditional Classrooms?

With the popularization of the Internet, network classrooms are gaining more and more popularity. As a new teaching pattern, network classrooms have become an effective complement to traditional classrooms. So some people propose such a question as will network classrooms replace traditional classrooms?

As to this question, the opinions vary from one to another. Some people think it quite possible for network classrooms to take the place of traditional classrooms. Firstly, network classrooms don’t need face-to-face communication and are not limited by time or place, which facilitates both teachers and students. Secondly, network classrooms release teachers from repeating the same contents since the video or audio material can be played time and again. However, many people have opposite standpoints. They say that with online courses, students lack direct communications with teachers and their confusion cannot be solved immediately. In addition, the computer system cannot be guaranteed to work stably all the time.

Personally, both network classrooms and traditional classrooms are necessary for students. If the traditional teaching patterns and the modern ones like network classrooms can be combined together, more fruitful education is sure to be realized.
