The volcano is one of the most surprising and frightening forces of nature. Maybe you have seen pictures of these “fireworks” of nature. Sometimes when a volcano erupts, a very large wall of melted rock moves down the side of a mountain. It looks like a “river of tire.”Sometimes volcanoes explode, throwing the melted rock and ashes(灰)high into the air. But where does this melted rock come from?

The earth is made up of many layers(层). The top layer that we see is called the crust. Under the crust are many layers of hard rock. But far, far beneath the crust where rock is so hot, that it is soft. In some places it even melts. The melted rock is called magma. Sometimes the magma breaks out to the surface through cracks(爆裂声)in the crust. These cracks are volcanoes.

Most people think of mountains when they think of volcanoes. But not every mountain is a volcano. A volcano is simply the opening in the earth from which the magma escapes. The hot magma, or lava as it is called, cols and builds up on the surface of the earth. Over thousands of years, this pile of cooled lava can grow to be very, very big. For example, the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, is a volcano. It towers more than 16,000 feet above the ground around it.

One day a student asked him, “ My dear teacher, didn’t you say you yourself have many ,many more questions about things than we do? But I think we students have far more than you.”

With a smile on his face, the teacher drew two circles, one as large as a big cake, the other smaller.

“Of course, I have learned much more. But it’s wrong to think that a teacher has fewer questions than his students. Now, look at these two circles. The inside of the bigger one is my knowledge of things, and the inside of the smaller one is yours. Out of the circles is what is still unknown to us. Since mine is larger, I have to use the longer line to draw the bigger circle. That means I have more opportunities to face what is still unknown. The human body naturally prevents attempt(企图) to lose or gain weight. Thus the best way to lower your weight is to do some exercise daily. Although scientists don’t agree exactly how this works to lower the “setpoint”, they do know that exercise helps your body work with you and not against you in at least the following ways:

1. Exercise burns calories(卡路里):If you walk two miles every day, you use an extra 1400 calories a week and lose about a pound in two weeks.

2. Exercise helps to burn fat and build muscle: since muscle requires more calories than fat does, the more muscle you have, the faster you will burn calories.

3. Finally exercise speeds up your metabolism(新陈代谢), not just while you’re exercising, but for several hours after exercise ends.

A program of light-to-moderate exercise done for only a half-hour a day is enough to keep your “setpoint” lowered, and thus helps you lose weight and keep it off. If you need to lose more than five pounds, combine regular exercise with a moderate reduction in calories until you reach your goal(目标).

A. believe in exercise at all

B. agree exercise helps to lose people’s weight

C. think exercise helps people’s bodies work against them

D. think exercise helps people’s bodies work with them

B. fast, the fat in your body reduces

C. faster, you burn less calories

D. less, you build more muscles

()4. Which of the following is not true?

A. A man of more muscles burns calories faster.

B. Exercise speeds up your metabolism even after it.

C. An hour and a half’s exercise is not enough to keep your “setpoint” lowered.

D. to lose more than 5 pounds, just doing exercise is not enough.

Very few of our birds stay with us the year round..Some come to us in the winter from the cold north. Others come from the south to spend the summer with us. How do they know the way? If you were told to find your way to a place hundreds of miles away, do you think you could do it?

Yet birds travel over mountains, forests, lakes and even across the oceans, and do not stray from the path. They find their way back in the spring to the same orchard and the very trees where they find they nested the summer before.

It is wonderful how quickly birds travel such long distances from their summer homes to their winter ones. Some birds have been known to fly hundreds of miles in a day. But others travel much more slowly.

Why do birds undertake these long journeys twice a year? Perhaps cold weather and lack of food drive them from us in the autumn, but we cannot tell why they leave the sunny south to come back to us in the spring. we know only that many of them like to make their nests and rear their young in the north.

We are sorry to see them go, but we know that when winter is over they will come back to us.

C. It is because of the hot weather in summer

D. There’s some reason that is still not known clearly.

All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes from the activity of the sun. The sun heats and feeds mankind. Each year it provides men with 200 million tons of grain and nearly 10 million tons of wood.

Coal, oil, natural gas, and all other fuels are stored-up energy from the sun. Some was collected by this season’s plants as carbon compounds(碳水化合物). Some was stored by plants and trees ages ago.

Even waterpower derives(得来) from the sun. Water turns into vapor(蒸汽)by the sun and falls as rain. It comes down the mountains and it converts to electric power.

Light transmits only the energy that comes from the sun’s outer layers(外层) and much of this energy that is directed towards the earth never arrives. About nine-tenths of it is absorbed by the atmosphere of the earth. In fact, the earth itself gets only one half-billionth of the sun’s entire output of radiant energy.
